Scholarships, scholarships, scholarships. Your high school counsellor talked about them, your parents talk about them, your friends are getting them and you don’t know where to start. Sound familiar? Scholarships applications can be one of the most intimidating because at the very root of the application, you’re essentially asking for free money. But the thing is, that’s the role of the scholarship: to help you pay for university.

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC may be a medium-sized university, but we have deep Student Award & Financial Aid pockets. Our very core is based on ensuring our students, whether pursuing a certificate, diploma or degree can be as successful as possible; and that starts with supporting our students to be financially sustainable.

TRU’s Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships are awarded to students before they even arrive on campus. Ranging from $500 to $22,000, these scholarships are available to students who have not previously attended post-secondary other than up to 12 transferable university credits on a part-time basis. The deadline to apply for Entrance Scholarships is March 1st for the following September; and the best part, there are Entrance Scholarships for every type of student: whether you’re a high achieving academic, community volunteer, athlete or leadership extraordinaire.

For every year that follows first year, TRU students can also apply to our ongoing scholarships, bursaries and other awards, which total more than a million dollars. Each award has its own unique criteria; some recognize accomplishment, others assist with financial need, and some recognize affiliation. One online application enables you to be considered for most awards. Certain awards also require additional documentation, such as essays and reference letters. Need help writing those essays? The Writing Centre can help too.

If you’re still looking for a little more financial sustainability, don’t forget all the external websites that offer scholarships just waiting to be awarded to a student. ScholarshipsCanada.com, Canlearn.ca and Studentawards.com are an awesome source to help you build more of a monetary cushion.

Whether you already have your financial budget planned down to the nickel or you’re still confused as to what program is best for you, TRU can help with every step of the way. For information on programs, scholarships, campus visits and more, check out www.tru.ca/admissions.
